Thailand closes hundreds of border schools amid escalation with Cambodia
Thai authorities have temporarily suspended the operation of 641 schools in border areas due to ongoing military tensions with Cambodia, the Ministry of Education announced.
The ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation and preparing contingency plans, including the possibility of extending school closures or shifting to online learning in affected regions, Caliber.Az reports via Thai media.
“The safety of students and school staff is the top priority,” the statement said.
The border escalation, which began last weekend, follows heightened tensions after a landmine explosion last month severely injured a Thai soldier, leading Bangkok to halt the implementation of a ceasefire agreement.
On December 8, Thailand carried out air strikes along its disputed border with Cambodia. At least one Thai soldier was killed and four others wounded during renewed clashes near two locations in Ubon Ratchathani province, after Thai troops reportedly came under Cambodian fire.
