Thousands protest in Tokyo, demand resignation of Japanese PM Takaichi PHOTO

20 July 2026 11:13

An anti-government rally was held in central Tokyo, Japan, near the National Diet Library and surrounding streets, drawing around 25,000 participants.

Protesters called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and opposed what they described as the government’s militarisation policies. They criticised increased defence spending, expanded arms exports and the adoption of laws that, in their view, mark a departure from Japan’s postwar course, Caliber.Az reports via Japanese media.

One participant, a 97-year-old woman who worked at a military factory during World War II, said the current situation reminded her of the years before the war.

Earlier, Sanae Takaichi outlined the government’s plans to strengthen Japan’s security and intelligence capabilities by improving intelligence analysis systems, crisis prevention measures and the protection of national interests.

Takaichi’s approval rating fell below 50 percent on July 17, according to recent polls.
