Tokyo records first "extremely hot day" of 2026 as temperatures top 35°C

Tokyo experienced its first "extremely hot day" of the year on July 20, as temperatures climbed above 35 degrees Celsius, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency also announced the end of the rainy season in the Kanto-Koshin region, which includes Tokyo, as well as in the Tokai region of central Japan on the same day, Caliber.Az reports, citing Xinhua.

According to the agency, temperatures had reached 30 degrees Celsius or higher at more than 600 of its 914 observation stations by Monday morning, prompting heatstroke warnings across large parts of the country.

Hot weather is expected to continue across eastern and western Japan throughout the week.

In Japan, an "extremely hot day" is defined as a day when temperatures reach or exceed 35 degrees Celsius.
