Train collision in Egypt's Nile Delta leaves three dead Dozens injured

15 September 2024 10:06

A tragic train collision in Egypt's Nile Delta has left at least three people dead, including two children, and injured 40 others, according to authorities.

The crash occurred in the city of Zagazig, the capital of Sharqiya province, as confirmed by Egypt's railway authority, Caliber.Az reports, citing Western media.

Eyewitness footage from the crash site shows a train car severely damaged by the impact, with crowds gathering around as rescuers attempted to lift the injured through the windows of the passenger cars.

Train accidents are a frequent occurrence in Egypt, largely due to an aging railway system and mismanagement. The country has experienced numerous derailments and collisions over the years, prompting concerns over railway safety.

In recent years, the Egyptian government has launched initiatives to modernize its rail network. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi announced that 250 billion Egyptian pounds (€7 billion) would be required to overhaul the country’s neglected railways. Despite these efforts, incidents continue, including last month’s crash in Alexandria, where a train collided with a truck, killing two people.

The cause of the Zagazig collision is still under investigation.
