Trump ally promises to share “true story” of Syria after Congressional visit

21 April 2025 16:05

A recent visit to Syria by a US Congressional delegation, including Representatives Marlin Stutzman and Cory Mills, has provided new perspectives on the situation in the country, particularly regarding Christian-Muslim coexistence.

The delegation, which included Republican Representatives Marlin Stutzman and Cory Mills, met with senior Syrian officials, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and then President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

During their trip, the delegation was introduced to the realities faced by Christian communities in Syria, particularly through their participation in the Great Sabbath prayers and visits to towns such as Saydnaya.

In Saydnaya, they witnessed firsthand the harmonious coexistence of Christian and Muslim families. The visit aimed to counter Western claims of human rights violations against Christians, especially following their tour of Maaloula, a town known for its Christian heritage.

Dr. Najma, who accompanied the delegation, emphasized the success of the visit, noting that it helped dispel misconceptions about the situation in Syria, particularly regarding religious freedoms. "This visit refuted all Western accusations regarding violations of Christian rights," he stated. The timing of the visit, coinciding with Easter celebrations, was particularly significant as it allowed the delegation to observe the celebrations alongside the local communities.

In a dinner speech at the Four Seasons Hotel, Stutzman described the meeting with the Syrian leadership as "extremely fruitful." She expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to directly engage with the Syrian government and its people.

Moreover, Representative Mills, a close friend of US President Donald Trump, confirmed that after witnessing the peaceful coexistence in Syria, he would personally present the full picture to President Trump. Mills emphasized that the delegation had documented their visit with videos and photos, which he hoped would offer a more balanced perspective on the situation in Syria.

The Trump administration, however, has yet to officially recognize the current Syrian government, and Washington has not lifted the harsh sanctions imposed during Assad’s rule.

After visiting a Syrian prison, Representative Stutzman remarked to reporters that she observed a renewed sense of energy and optimism among the Syrian people. He added that, "As the country’s new government makes decisions, it will be very helpful having the United States understand what the changes are here and that the sanctions lifted would be a huge economic boom." He further stated, "Any move to lift sanctions would be President Trump’s decision."
