Trump announces $550 billion Japanese investment deal with US

18 February 2026 09:57

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the launch of the first group of Japanese investment projects in the United States under a bilateral trade agreement valued at $550 billion, describing the initiative as a major step toward strengthening American industry.

In a post published on the Truth Social platform, Trump outlined three flagship projects in strategically important sectors. The initiatives include the development of oil and gas production in Texas, energy investments in Ohio, and a project focused on the extraction of critical minerals in Georgia. The president stressed that the projects were made possible by his tariff policy.

Trump called the agreement “historic,” saying it is intended to revive US manufacturing, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and reinforce both national and economic security.

“The scale of these projects are so large, and could not be done without one very special word, TARIFFS,” he said.

Among the planned initiatives are the construction of what Trump described as the largest gas-fired power plant ever built in Ohio, the launch of a liquefied natural gas production facility along the Gulf Coast aimed at expanding exports, and the establishment of a critical minerals processing enterprise designed to reduce US reliance on foreign suppliers.

“America is building again. America is producing again. And America is WINNING again,” the president added.

The announcement comes as preparations continue for a White House summit between Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, scheduled for next month following the Liberal Democratic Party’s decisive victory in parliamentary elections earlier this month.
