Trump hints at possible action on Iran’s key oil island “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t”
President Donald Trump pointed out that he is still considering the possibility of seizing Iran’s Kharg Island, a key fuel hub in the northern Persian Gulf, adding that US forces would likely need to remain there for an extended period.
“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump told Financial Times. “It would also mean we had to be there [in Kharg Island] for a while,” he added.
When asked about the state of Iranian defences on Kharg Island, he said: “I don’t think they have any defence. We could take it very easily.”
The island, through which 90% of Tehran’s oil exports pass, has long played a critical role in Iran’s economy.
Trump has intensified the US military presence in the region, with the Pentagon directing the deployment of 10,000 troops specialised in seizing and holding territory.
Around 3,500 troops, including roughly 2,200 Marines, arrived on March 27. An additional 2,200 Marines are on their way, while thousands from the 82nd Airborne Division have also been ordered to the area.
