Trump may meet with Zelenskyy at NATO summit in The Hague
U.S. President Donald Trump may meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the NATO summit currently taking place in The Hague.
This statement was confirmed by the White House, Caliber.Az reports, citing US media.
Earlier today, Zelenskyy announced that he plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit. According to him, the Ukrainian and U.S. teams are working out the timing and agenda of the bilateral meeting.
“Indeed, one of the issues I will be discussing with President Trump at the meeting is the defence package that Ukraine is ready to purchase. And we will go over that with him. I am confident that we will have that opportunity,” Zelenskyy emphasised.
Later, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, during his visit to The Hague, held a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Among other topics, they discussed the upcoming meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Trump.
The potential meeting occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated with the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine has relied heavily on U.S. military and financial aid to counter Russian aggression, with billions of dollars in assistance provided since 2022, including advanced weaponry like HIMARS, Patriot systems, and Abrams tanks.
However, U.S. support has been a point of contention, particularly during Trump’s presidency.
Trump, who began his second term in January 2025, has expressed scepticism about extensive U.S. aid to Ukraine, advocating for a negotiated settlement to end the conflict. His “America First” policy emphasises reducing U.S. overseas commitments, which could influence discussions on the defence package Zelenskyy referenced.
