Trump opens Iran talks, catching Netanyahu off guard

02 May 2025 19:55

US President Donald Trump has surprised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by launching direct negotiations with Iran, aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

The sudden diplomatic move in April blindsided Netanyahu, who had travelled to Washington seeking Trump’s support for military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Four sources said Netanyahu learned about the talks less than 24 hours before a joint press event.

Tehran remains concerned Netanyahu may act militarily regardless of the outcome. The US and Iran have already held three rounds of talks, with a fourth round expected soon in Rome.

The framework being discussed revives key elements of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which Trump withdrew from in 2018. Though Trump once called it "the worst in history," the updated deal reportedly extends restrictions to 25 years and enhances oversight. "Anything less would leave the threshold threat intact," said former US negotiator Dennis Ross, who urged tougher, permanent curbs on Iran’s nuclear capacity.

Iran is open to capping enrichment at 3.67 per cent, allowing greater IAEA access, and exporting its 60 per cent enriched uranium. However, it insists on keeping its enrichment rights—something Netanyahu opposes, demanding “zero enrichment” and a Libya-style dismantlement. A senior Iranian official said the deal shaping up is “JCPOA 2,” offering both sides political wins.

Talks remain deadlocked over Iran’s missile programme and guarantees Trump won’t withdraw again. Analysts caution that even a strike would not eliminate Iran’s nuclear knowledge. "You cannot bomb know-how," said former US diplomat Alan Eyre. Despite US objections, Israeli officials believe conditions may be ripe for a strike. "This is a historic window for Israel to strike Iran's nuclear sites," a regional official said.
