Trump says US close to Iran deal involving uranium export
US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a potential agreement with Iran that could include Tehran exporting highly enriched uranium to the United States, according to comments made in a phone call with PBS News on May 6.
Trump said he believes negotiations are nearing a breakthrough, while acknowledging previous setbacks in talks.
"I feel the U.S. is closing in on a deal, 'but I felt that way before with them, so we'll see what happens.'"
He also said it was “unlikely” that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, would be sent to participate in further negotiations.
Trump suggested a deal could potentially be reached before his upcoming trip to China next week, adding that the outcome remains uncertain.
"I think it's got a very good chance of ending, and if it doesn't end, we have to go back to bombing the hell out of them," Trump told White House correspondent Liz Landers.
The remarks came hours after Trump posted on Truth Social that a mission to escort commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz had been “paused” as talks progress.
