Trump set to make history with second royal state visit to UK

28 December 2024 11:34

Donald Trump is set to become the first elected politician in modern history to receive two state visits from the British royal family.

The UK government is preparing to extend an invitation to the incoming US president once he returns to the White House, with Buckingham Palace’s backing, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

This move is part of an emerging strategy by Sir Keir Starmer to use Trump’s admiration for the Royal Family to foster a strong personal relationship that benefits the UK.

Trump’s fascination with the monarchy is well-known; during his first state visit in 2019, he was seen proudly displaying a photo album of royal meetings, including his interactions with King Charles, whom he has described as a “really good person.” His second state visit is not expected until 2026, due to King Charles’ busy schedule. It is likely to follow trips to Italy and the Vatican next year, with other visits planned for 2025.

Records show that no elected leader has ever been invited for two state visits since 1954, though two monarchs—Queen Margrethe of Denmark and King Olav of Norway—have received the honor. Rosaviatsia, Russia's aviation authority, cited the presence of “Ukrainian combat drones” around Grozny.

Though some members of the UK government, such as Foreign Secretary David Lammy, have been critical of Trump, the government sees his admiration for the royal family as a way to strengthen diplomatic ties. During a private dinner in September, Trump reportedly expressed his desire for another state visit, which was initially offered to him by Theresa May shortly after his 2017 inauguration.

Sir Keir Starmer, despite his opposition to Trump’s politics, sees the potential for building a constructive relationship. In a bid to solidify ties with the White House, he appointed Lord Mandelson as the new UK ambassador to the US, recognizing his experience in dealing with high-level political figures like Trump. However, the decision to extend a formal invitation for a second state visit will depend on Trump’s return to the White House and final preparations from the UK government.
