Trump to meet Syrian president al-Sharaa in New York amid UNGA
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa next week in New York, reports say.
The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, following the leaders’ first encounter in Riyadh in May, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Preparations are underway for the meeting, and al-Sharaa has been invited to a reception traditionally hosted by the sitting US president. The Syrian leader is set to address the UN General Assembly for the first time in decades.
Ahead of the anticipated talks, al-Sharaa’s top diplomat visited Washington this week, holding meetings with senior US officials and key lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Discussions reportedly focused on the potential lifting of the Caesar Act sanctions, which were enacted to penalise Syria’s former leader, Bashar al-Assad.
