Trump willing to meet Putin only once deal within reach What Putin told Trump about Azerbaijan-Armenia meeting

26 October 2025 14:00

US President Donald Trump said he does not intend to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin until he believes a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is within reach.

"You have to know that we're going to make a deal, I'm not going to be wasting my time," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One in Doha on October 25, Caliber.Az reports, citing FOX News.

Speaking to journalists after refuelling in Qatar en route to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit, Trump addressed the possibility of rescheduling a meeting with Putin.

"I'm going to have to know that we're going to make a deal," he said after taking off from Al Udeid Air Base. "I'm not going to be wasting my time. I've always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing."

Trump said he had expected the war in Ukraine to have been resolved "long before" the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The US president also revealed that Putin had commented on Trump’s role in brokering the signing of documents that pave the way for a future peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"We have Azerbaijan and Armenia. That was very tough," Trump said, referring to the peace summit he hosted at the White House between the two nations.

"In fact, Putin told me on the phone, he said, ‘Boy, that was amazing,’ because everybody tried to get that done, and they couldn't. I got it done."

Last week, Trump had announced the possibility of meeting Putin in Budapest within the next two weeks but later scrapped those plans, calling the idea "a waste of time." While Trump and Putin held a phone conversation on October 16, the meeting was ultimately cancelled following a discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on October 21.

Explaining Trump’s abrupt decision, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president "feels as though, unfortunately, from the Russian side as of late, he has not seen enough interest in enough action in terms of moving the ball forward toward peace."
