Trump: Witkoff, Kushner heading to Moscow with push to end Ukraine war

05 September 2026 09:19

U.S. President Donald Trump said on September 4 that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were travelling abroad with a proposal aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

"They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," Trump told reporters during comments in the Oval Office, foreign media reports.

Trump said the two had been sent to determine whether a peace agreement could be reached, adding:

"We have an idea for peace. I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They've done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done. And there may be a good chance that we'll do it."

Trump did not provide details of the proposal or specify whether Witkoff and Kushner would visit Russia, Ukraine or both countries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on September 4 that the two U.S. envoys would travel to Ukraine on Sunday, September 6, after visiting Moscow.

The pair had been expected to travel to Moscow over the weekend and then continue to Kyiv, according to two sources cited by Reuters

The visit to the Ukrainian capital would mark the envoys’ first trip to the country that has been at war for years and under a steady barrage of Russian attacks in recent weeks. They have visited Moscow in the past.
