Turkish firms to undertake major development projects in four Libyan cities

15 April 2025 19:31

Two Turkish construction companies have signed contracts to carry out major development projects across four cities in Libya, according to Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund.

The fund has formalised agreements with Libco Construction and Cevahir Construction for a range of infrastructure projects in Benghazi, Al Bayda, Shahhat and Tobruk, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

The planned initiatives include the development and maintenance of road networks, enhancements to healthcare infrastructure, and the construction of public hospitals. The projects aim to bolster access to medical services and improve urban infrastructure in the eastern region of the country.

Turkish firms have been actively involved in construction and infrastructure works across Libya, with Benghazi seeing a significant concentration of such projects.

Note that, Turkish construction firms have significantly expanded their presence in Libya, contributing to the country's reconstruction efforts. As of April 2024, Turkish contractors have undertaken projects valued at approximately $30.8 billion in Libya, making it the fourth-largest market for Türkiye's construction sector.

A notable project includes the Tripoli-Tarhuna highway, where the Turkish company Infitah completed the first phase of an 82-kilometer road, enhancing transportation between key regions. In Benghazi, Turkish firms have been contracted to refurbish the University of Benghazi’s Central Library, modernize sewage treatment facilities, and revitalize the 23rd July Lake, aiming to improve urban infrastructure and environmental conditions.

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding was signed in April 2024 between Libya's Airports Authority and Turkish company Terminal Yapı, alongside UK-based ERG International, to invest in the development of Tripoli International Airport. This agreement focuses on financing infrastructure projects and rehabilitating the airport to meet international standards.

These initiatives underscore the strengthening economic ties between Turkey and Libya, with Turkish contractors playing a pivotal role in Libya's post-conflict reconstruction and development.
