Turkish president calls on major powers to promote peace in Ukraine
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the immediate establishment of peace in Ukraine, urging major global powers to adopt a more active stance in promoting peace negotiations.
His comments came during a press conference following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Erdogan emphasized that the time had come for the war between Russia and Ukraine to end, stating, "The countries that we have known in the past as mighty powers should demonstrate a position in favour of peace. When peace is achieved, there will be no losers." He added that the entire world is eagerly awaiting an end to the conflict, stressing the urgency of peace efforts.
The Turkish president also noted that both he and the country’s foreign minister were committed to facilitating peace talks between the two conflicting nations. "As our closest neighbours, myself and my foreign minister, want to take steps to ensure peace between our interlocutors [Russia and Ukraine] as soon as possible," Erdogan said.
Erdogan praised Ukrainian President’s stance on peace, affirming that Zelenskyy was "clearly in favour of peace" and had conveyed this message to the Turkish side. "I want that in my meetings with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin we also follow this path to peace and take steps in this direction," Erdogan continued.
The Turkish president reiterated his country's strong support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, emphasizing that Türkiye has consistently raised this issue at international forums. "We have always raised this issue at all international meetings and continue to do so. In the future, the principle of Ukraine's territorial integrity will remain especially important for us," Erdogan concluded.
