Türkiye newspaper: US set to pull most troops from Syria, leaving just symbolic base
The US is reportedly preparing to pull most of its military forces out of Syria, maintaining only a symbolic presence at a single base.
“Sources emphasised that the US will exit Syria, with only one base remaining in the Arab Republic as a form of ‘symbolic’ presence,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Türkiye newspaper.
The officials also highlighted Türkiye’s consistent stance on regional conflicts: “Türkiye consistently reiterates its position that regional problems should be resolved by the countries of the region themselves, without external interference.”
The anticipated US troop reduction reflects President Donald Trump’s strategic decision to reduce American involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts that lack clear benefits for Washington.
Following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Islamist groups rose to power in the country. In response, the US relaxed sanctions on Syria, lifting restrictions on Syrian Airlines, the Central Bank of Syria, and several other organisations.
The US-led military intervention in Syria began on September 22, 2014, aimed at combating the Islamic State (a group banned in Russia). This operation was launched without approval from the Syrian government in Damascus. At present, 24 Western coalition military bases and four command centres remain active within Syrian territory.
