The completion of the Azerbaijani Quarter highlights the strong support Azerbaijan continues to provide in the aftermath of the February 6, 2023 twin earthquakes, which remain among the deadliest natural disasters in Türkiye’s recent history. The first tremor, measuring 7.8 in magnitude, was followed by a second 7.5-magnitude quake just nine hours later.
The quakes claimed the lives of at least 56,000 people across Türkiye and northwest Syria. Among the most affected areas was Gaziantep, a hub for humanitarian aid and home to large numbers of Syrian refugees.
In Türkiye, more than 230,000 buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged. In Syria, around 10,600 structures were affected, including roughly 3,500 in Aleppo, many of which remain in urgent need of repair.
Turkish authorities have described the tragedy as the “disaster of the century,” pointing to the massive human and material losses. Recovery efforts continue across the region, with millions still in need of assistance and extensive debris removal underway.
The Azerbaijani Quarter in Kahramanmaraş now stands as a powerful symbol of international solidarity and resilience, reflecting the enduring bond between Türkiye and Azerbaijan during the ongoing recovery process.
