Türkiye to spearhead naval security framework for Ukraine, FM says
Türkiye has agreed to lead the maritime component of the security guarantees being discussed for Ukraine as part of a potential future peace settlement, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan said Ankara would play a central role in efforts to develop the naval element of the proposed security framework.
"Previously, the question was raised as to how Türkiye could potentially contribute [to securing a peaceful resolution]. One of the most important aspects of a potential peace agreement currently under discussion is security guarantees for Ukraine. These guarantees include land, maritime, and air components," Fidan said.
He added that Türkiye had reached an understanding with its allies regarding its role in the initiative.
"Türkiye has agreed to lead the maritime component. We have a mutual understanding with our allies on this issue. Planned work is also underway with the relevant allied naval forces," Fidan noted.
