Türkiye welcomes reopening of Azerbaijani embassy in Iran
Türkiye has shown its approval and support for the reopening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran, which had been closed for over a year following a terrorist attack.
“We welcome the resumption of the operations of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran. We consider the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, and the restoration of diplomatic ties to the normal level as important for the region’s stability and the spirit of cooperation,” Caliber.Az reports citing the message posted on the website of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
The Azerbaijani embassy in Iran resumed its activity on July 15, 2024.
The embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran was attacked on January 27, 2023, at around 08:00 (GMT+3:30). The perpetrator passed by the guard post with a Kalashnikov rifle and opened fire inside the embassy, while its staff tried to neutralize him. The head of the embassy's security service, Orkhan Asgarov, was killed in the attack, while two guards were injured. Shortly after, a suspect was detained by Iranian police.
The Azerbaijani State Security Service launched an investigation. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev condemned the attack. The Azerbaijani side regarded the incident as a "terrorist act". The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry announced the evacuation of the embassy personnel in Tehran. On January 29, Azerbaijan evacuated most of the embassy staff from Tehran and suspended the embassy's operation.
