Tusk: Poland ready for permanent US military base

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has expressed support for establishing a permanent US military base in Poland, while declining to take part in a dispute over who deserves credit for the proposal.

Earlier, President Karol Nawrocki proposed naming the potential facility “Fort Trump”. Tusk said he did not want to become involved in debates over who had made the greater contribution to the initiative.

“I do not wish to get involved in these debates about who deserves more credit, because it is a bit frivolous,” Tusk told Polsat News.

The prime minister said establishing a permanent US base would require “enormous effort” and “a great deal of money”.

At the same time, Tusk said he shared Nawrocki’s view that Poland should ensure the widest possible presence of US troops in the country.

He expressed hope that a permanent US military base would be established in Poland as soon as possible, adding that the timeline would depend on both Warsaw and Washington.

“Poland is ready for this,” Tusk said.
