UK set to tighten economic pressure on Russia with new measures
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a new package of sanctions targeting Russia.
The United Kingdom will include liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers in the new sanctions regime against Russia. London will be the first to impose restrictions specifically on vessels transporting Russian LNG, the British government said.
The measures will also target companies involved in procuring Western technology for the needs of the Russian military, as well as increase pressure on certain third-country suppliers providing financial services to Moscow.
The new sanctions are expected to be announced on June 16 on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. The package will also cover Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and financial networks used to circumvent Western restrictions. The total number of sanctioned vessels and gas carriers linked to Russia is expected to exceed 600.
