Ukraine detains two Russian agents linked to van explosion in Kyiv PHOTO
Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU) has arrested two Russian agents involved in a van explosion near an SSU facility on a central Kyiv street on February 11.
According to the investigation, the attack was organised by a 47-year-old foreign national and Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman who had been recruited by Russian intelligence, Caliber.Az reports, citing the security service.
The deserter left his post in the Sumy region and was hiding in western Ukraine. Following instructions from his Russian handler, he involved a 29-year-old accomplice from Kyiv, posing as a Ukrainian intelligence officer, and tasked him with constructing a remotely activated improvised explosive device (IED).
Russian operatives acquired a used van through intermediaries, reportedly converting it into a medical transport vehicle for wounded soldiers. The interior was fitted with oxygen and gas cylinders and a remote-access webcam, allowing Russian intelligence to monitor the vehicle’s parking. The gas cylinder equipment amplified the blast, while the camera enabled remote detonation control.
After planting the IED, the perpetrators left the scene, and Russian intelligence triggered the device remotely. Searches of the suspects’ temporary residences uncovered bomb-making components, cameras, and SIM cards intended for potential future attacks.
Both detainees have been charged under Ukraine’s “terrorist act” statute. They remain in custody and face up to 12 years in prison with property confiscation.
