Ukraine downs majority of Russian drones in overnight air assault PHOTO

16 June 2026 10:42

Ukraine’s armed forces said Russia launched a large-scale overnight aerial attack involving ballistic missiles and more than 130 drones, most of which were intercepted or neutralised by air defences.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia used two Iskander-M ballistic missiles along with 132 strike drones, including Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas models, as well as Parodia decoy drones, during the June 16 attack, Caliber.Az reports.

The Air Force said the assault was repelled using a combination of air defence missile systems, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems and mobile fire groups operated by Ukraine’s Defence Forces.

As of 08:30 local time, Ukrainian officials said air defence units had shot down or neutralised 114 drones across northern, southern and eastern regions of the country.

Despite the interceptions, authorities reported that missile strikes and 16 attack drones hit nine locations, while debris from downed drones was found at eight additional sites.

Ukrainian officials said the attack was ongoing at the time of reporting, warning that Russian drones remained in Ukrainian airspace and urging residents to follow safety precautions.

“The attack continues; Russian UAVs are in the airspace. Observe safety precautions!” the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.
