Ukraine faces ongoing power outages amid Russian attacks on energy infrastructure
Ukraine continues to face significant challenges in its energy sector amid ongoing attacks by Russian forces, Ukrainian Energy Minister Artem Nekrasov said at a briefing on December 17.
Nekrasov stressed that the Dnipropetrovsk region was targeted overnight, but power has since been fully restored to all consumers. In the Odesa region, restoration efforts are ongoing, with approximately 32,000 subscribers still without electricity, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
He added that, due to systematic attacks on power infrastructure, around 400,000 people remain without electricity on a daily basis, particularly in border and frontline regions. Russian strikes continue to target power plants as well as electricity transmission and distribution facilities, complicating and prolonging the restoration process.
An interdepartmental group under Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy has released an additional 800 megawatts of capacity, which is expected to reduce the duration of power outages for both households and industrial users.
