Ukraine’s ex-defence chief rejects advisory role as resignation sparks protests PHOTO
Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has declined an offer from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to serve as his advisor, following the confirmation of his resignation on Wednesday.
Fedorov revealed his decision during a press briefing, stating that he had formally turned down the Ukrainian leader's proposal to join the administration in an advisory capacity. This comes shortly after Fedorov publicly confirmed his departure from the defence ministry, reflecting on the objectives he fell short of accomplishing during his tenure.
His resignation has triggered widespread domestic discontent and public demonstrations. Rallies have broken out across several of Ukraine's major cities, with citizens gathering to protest the decision. Demonstrators were seen singing the national anthem, chanting slogans, and demanding Fedorov’s immediate reinstatement.
The sudden political reshuffle has also raised eyebrows within the European Union. Andrius Kubilius, the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, announced that Fedorov's resignation would be discussed within the bloc. Highlighting his close working relationship with Fedorov both before and after his ministerial appointment, Kubilius questioned the decision, asking, "Why is such a person being replaced?"
Meanwhile, Moscow has weighed in on the changes in Kyiv's defence leadership. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov downplayed the significance of the personnel change, stating, "By and large, it makes no difference who the defence minister is. The main thing for us is that there is someone in Kyiv who will take responsibility and make the decision that will allow for a peaceful settlement."
Peskov further added that it is "well known" in Kyiv exactly what decisions must be taken to resolve the conflict.
