Ukraine’s top general details battlefield situation at NATO meeting in Brussels

20 May 2026 14:07

The Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, took part in a meeting of the Ukraine–NATO Council at the level of armed forces commanders held at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

In a post on his Telegram channel, he said today, the security situation requires maximum unity, determination, and speed of action in countering Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports.

“Ukraine is defending not only itself today — we are defending the future of the entire Euro-Atlantic space. I informed partners about the current operational situation on the front line, the needs of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, and key priorities in strengthening our capabilities," he noted.

Syrskyi stressed that the tactics of active defence allow us to exhaust the enemy, restore positions, and inflict maximum losses on the adversary.

"Every day, the Russian army loses at least one thousand servicemen killed and wounded. Since the beginning of 2026, total enemy losses have already exceeded 141,500 people, of whom more than 83,000 are irrecoverable losses. Our unmanned systems units play an important role in this. For the fifth consecutive month, thanks solely to their work, Russia is losing more manpower than it can mobilise," he noted.

According to him, Ukraine has also significantly increased strikes deep in the enemy rear thanks to the rapid deployment of Middle Strike-type drones.

"We are also achieving certain successes in suppressing Russian air defence at shorter ranges, which allows for increasingly effective targeting of logistics hubs, oil refineries, and facilities of Russia’s defence-industrial complex.

Separately, I thanked our allies for their support for Ukraine and invited the NATO Military Committee to visit Ukraine.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine highly value all mechanisms of cooperation with NATO and support further deepening of practical interaction — from strategic planning to the exchange of combat experience. Our common task is to create conditions for a just peace through strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities,” he wrote.

The meeting was held within the framework of the NATO–Ukraine Council at NATO headquarters, with participation from senior military leadership and allied representatives.
