Ukraine should shift from demands for Western support to negotiating with Russia

03 November 2024 11:54

The US has provided Ukraine with more than 300 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, making a substantial contribution to the country's defence efforts.

Critics contend that Western weapons should have been delivered in greater quantities to enhance effectiveness and minimize tactical challenges, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Some experts argue that Ukraine's strategic planning has been hindered by the gradual nature of Western aid. Despite receiving billions in assistance, the situation on the front lines has remained mostly unchanged.

Relying on foreign support without a clear route to victory raises concerns about long-term sustainability. Promoting peace instead of increasing arms may provide a more viable way forward.

Critics of the US slow and gradual approach to providing military aid to Ukraine highlight the success of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle as an example of what can be achieved when Western weapons are supplied in larger numbers.

“The way Ukraine’s Western partners have supplied weapons, often in small numbers and after significant delays, has come with heavy criticism throughout the war,” UK's journalist Sinead Baker, writing about Russia and Ukraine, noted.

“Having enough of a weapon is important for militaries as it allows them to use those weapons more flexibly. It means being able to put the weapons in risky situations where they could achieve big breakthroughs, and if any are lost, it’s not a major tactical and public-relations disaster,” she added.

Canada, a strong supporter of Kyiv on the international stage, also announced the donation of 80,840 surplus small unarmed air-to-surface rockets to Ukraine, along with 1,300 warheads. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Canada has committed C$4.5 billion in military aid.

Since the beginning of 2022, Canada has committed $4.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. This funding will allow Canada to deliver military assistance to Ukraine through to 2029.

Germany is the second-biggest arms supplier to Ukraine after the US.

To date, it has allocated approximately 28 billion euros ($30 billion) for military support and committed to future expenditures. According to the 2025 budget agreement, Germany will provide 4 billion euros ($4.4 billion) in military support to Ukraine, which is half of what was allocated in 2024. Russian authorities have repeatedly asserted that the influx of weapons to Ukraine will not diminish Russia's resolve or change the course of the special military operation.
