Ukraine unveils monument to "Baba Yaga" drone Symbol of terror for Russian forces

26 December 2025 23:03

An interactive monument to the legendary Ukrainian unmanned bomber, "Baba Yaga," has been unveiled in the city park of Vyshneve, near Kyiv, with key figures from Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) in attendance.

The monument, honouring the fearsome drone that has become a symbol of terror for Russian troops, was also accompanied by the transfer of new drones to the "Shaman" Battalion, a special forces unit of the GUR, RBC-Ukraine writes.

During the ceremony, Vadym Skibitsky, the deputy head of the GUR, discussed the significance of the "Baba Yaga" in Ukraine’s defence strategy. He expressed that the drone had become one of the most effective tools in the country’s arsenal, emphasising its proven capability in battle. He further noted that the drone’s reputation had struck fear into Russian forces, making it a key asset for Ukraine.

The monument serves as a tribute to Ukraine’s technological advantages on the battlefield. It was the result of efforts led by local volunteer and activist Igor Omelyanovich, who sought an innovative way to rally support for the Ukrainian military when traditional fundraising methods became less effective. Omelyanovich explained that the idea for the sculpture emerged when it became clear that a new approach was needed to raise attention and support for the army.

At the unveiling, Vyshneve Mayor Ilya Dikov highlighted the importance of continued support for Ukraine’s armed forces. He explained that the newly donated drones, which are valued at 800,000 hryvnia each, would significantly bolster the defence capabilities of the "Shaman" Battalion.

The "Baba Yaga" drone, initially designed for agricultural use, was repurposed as a precision bomber during the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The drones, which are equipped with thermal cameras and can carry up to 15 kilograms of explosive payloads, have become an essential part of Ukraine's military strategy. With a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a range of 10 kilometers, they are designed for nighttime precision strikes against enemy targets.
