Russia’s Kostroma power plant hit by drone strikes, gas distribution site on fire Photo/Video/UPDATED

06 November 2025 11:35

The Kostromskaya Thermal Power Plant in Volgorechensk, one of Russia's largest power facilities, was hit by 2-3 Ukrainian UAVs during the night.

A gas distribution site near the power plant is also reportedly on fire, as confirmed by an analysis from ASTRA's OSINT team, which reviewed videos and photos from the scene, Caliber.Az reports.

Local footage from the area, filmed from both the 50th Anniversary of the Lenin Komsomol Street and Embankment Street, shows air defence systems engaged in countermeasures during the attack.

Governor Sergey Sitnikov later updated the public, confirming that emergency services were on site, working to contain the damage and repair the energy infrastructure. Despite the attacks, power supply in the region remains uninterrupted, and no casualties have been reported so far.

In response to the ongoing situation, the governor announced the closure of kindergartens and schools in Volgorechensk for one day, citing safety concerns for students and staff. Sitnikov also confirmed that he had visited the Kostromskaya power plant to meet with management and discuss the response to the UAV strikes.

The Kostromskaya Thermal Power Plant, which has an installed capacity of 3,600 MW, is a key energy supplier for central Russia. The facility is primarily powered by natural gas, with fuel oil as a backup. The plant is operated by PJSC Inter RAO.

On November 6, 2025, Ukrainian drones attacked energy infrastructure in Volgorechensk, a town in Russia’s Kostroma region, Governor Sergey Sitnikov reported on his Telegram channel, as Caliber.Az cites.

Sitnikov noted that residents heard several explosions in the morning, triggered by the response of the city’s air defence systems.

“At the moment, operational services are working at the site to eliminate the consequences on energy infrastructure facilities,” he wrote.

According to the governor, power supply in the region has not been disrupted. All systems continue to operate normally, and no casualties have been reported.

In response to the attack, Sitnikov convened an operational headquarters and reminded the public that fragments from downed drones may contain explosives, warning that approaching them is strictly prohibited.

UNIAN additionally reported that overnight, the Kostromskaya Thermal Power Plant, one of Russia’s largest and most powerful power plants, was struck in Volgorechensk.
