UN condemns another wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities
UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Denise Brown condemned the latest wave of attacks on the capital and populous cities of Ukraine.
“For the people of Ukraine, the new year began with losses, pain, and despair. For the third day in a row, large-scale air strikes by the Russian Federation have killed people, particularly children, homes and other civilian infrastructure are damaged,” RBC-Ukraine reports.
Brown said it was alarming that many parts of Ukraine's capital were left without power and water supplies just as temperatures were expected to drop to nearly -20 degrees Celsius this week. In addition, as a result of the fighting, hundreds of thousands of people in the Donetsk region are also left without electricity.
“On behalf of the humanitarian community, I reaffirm our commitment to continue to support the people of Ukraine suffering from the devastation caused by the Russian Federation's invasion. And today, my thoughts are with the families and friends of the dead and wounded, as well as with those who worry about those whose fate is not yet known,” Brown said.
The United Nations reiterates to the Russian Federation that indiscriminate attacks and shelling of civilians and civilian infrastructure are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.
