UN: Global expectations for COP29 extremely high
UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva has said that global expectations from COP29 are extremely high, no Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC can afford to fail.
"The upcoming COP29 climate conference will be an important event for both the host country and the global community. This meeting will play a crucial role in promoting climate action on a global scale," she said in an interview with Report.
According to Andreeva, the UN team in Azerbaijan also sees the COP as an opportunity for the country.
"Hosting this session in Baku is a chance to capitalise on the positive momentum and increase Azerbaijan's ambitions to combat climate change," the UN Resident Coordinator added.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) will be held in Baku in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on 11 December 2023. Within the framework of the event, the capital of Azerbaijan will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
