UN-Habitat: Over 70% of youth struggle to find housing in their cities

03 February 2026 12:48

More than 70% of young people globally are unable to own housing in the cities where they live, Anna Soave, Head of UN-Habitat's Country Office in Azerbaijan, told the 11th Forum of Azerbaijani Youth.

She attributed the trend to rising living costs, underemployment, and unemployment among youth—particularly in capital cities where prices are increasing faster than wages, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

These factors, she said, contribute to delayed independence, postponed marriage, and migration.

"Young people leave their parents' homes later than before, often after the age of 30. This is not a choice, but the result of a lack of affordability," Soave said.

The UN official also emphasised the role of youth in the upcoming 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), which will be held in Azerbaijan.

"Youth participation in the World Urban Forum is not symbolic. Housing affordability, mobility, environmental pollution, climate risks, rising temperatures, and the availability of quality and accessible public spaces are among the key challenges facing young people both globally and in Azerbaijan," she said.

The 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) will provide journalists with exclusive access to high-level debates shaping the future of cities and communities. Attending media professionals will have opportunities for interviews with ministers, mayors, and UN leaders, as well as access to press briefings, dedicated media zones, and behind-the-scenes coverage of key sessions.

Over six days, WUF13 will host a wide range of events, including assemblies, dialogues, roundtables, special sessions, and an extended Urban Expo. The Forum will open with a high-level segment on the New Urban Agenda and conclude with a closing ceremony, offering comprehensive insights into urban innovation and housing solutions.
