UN Security Council to hold closed-door talks on strikes in Iran

27 March 2026 11:39

The UN Security Council is set to hold closed-door consultations on March 27 at the request of Russia to discuss ongoing strikes in Iran.

“The Russian Federation has requested closed-door consultations with the UN Security Council due to the ongoing strikes on civilian infrastructure in Iran, including educational and health care facilities,” said Evgeny Uspensky, spokesman for Russia’s UN envoy, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Iran has faced near-daily bombardments since February 28, when US-Israeli military strikes triggered the escalation, spreading to several parts of the region.

On the first day of the conflict, a strike in the southern city of Minab hit a school, killing more than 160 children. Preliminary findings from a US military investigation, reported by The New York Times, suggest the attack was caused by a targeting error involving a US Tomahawk cruise missile.

The Security Council meeting, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. local time in New York (14:00 GMT), comes as the US, which holds the Council presidency this month, seeks to address Russia’s concerns.

The ongoing US-Israeli campaign has targeted Iranian leadership, missile sites, and military infrastructure, prompting significant Iranian retaliatory actions across the Gulf, including the effective closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a key route for about a fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas in peacetime.

Separately, the UN Human Rights Council will convene in Geneva on March 27 to specifically examine the deadly school strike.
