UN supports diplomatic moves for peace following Russia-Ukraine talks
The United Nations (UN) has officially endorsed efforts aimed at bringing peace between Russia and Ukraine, following the recent round of direct talks between the two nations.
Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq commented on the negotiations, which took place in Istanbul on May 16, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Haq expressed the organisation's positive outlook on initiatives that contribute to peace, highlighting the importance of such actions in line with international law and UN resolutions.
"We welcome all efforts aimed at achieving peace in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council," Haq stated.
The Istanbul meeting marked the first face-to-face discussions between Russian and Ukrainian representatives since 2022. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who led the Russian delegation, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks.
