US Ambassador Kushner vows support to France in fighting antisemitism
After being summoned to the French Foreign Ministry over comments about the country's insufficient efforts to combat anti-Semitism, US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner has said that American diplomats would help the French fight this phenomenon, including through the education system.
“In my team’s meeting with the MFA on Monday, we recognized our common goal to combat antisemitism, including through education. We agreed to take decisive action through DILCRAH, through our bilateral working group, and through partnerships with private organizations to address the pernicious roots of antisemitism and defeat it,” Kushner wrote on X.
On August 25, 2025, U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner was summoned by the French Foreign Ministry following an open letter he published in The Wall Street Journal. In the letter, addressed to French President Emmanuel Macron, Kushner accused France of failing to take sufficient action against a surge in antisemitic incidents, particularly since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked the ongoing Gaza conflict.
He argued that France’s criticism of Israel and its plan to recognise a Palestinian state in September 2025 were fueling antisemitism, stating, “Public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life in France.” He also claimed that “anti-Zionism is antisemitism” and urged Macron to enforce hate crime laws more rigorously and ensure the safety of Jewish communities.
