US ambassador to Japan to depart post for potential role in Harris administration
US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel is set to leave his position in November, with plans to pursue a role in the administration of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, should she win the upcoming election.
Emanuel, who has served as the US ambassador to Japan since January 2022, is speculated to be a candidate for the position of Assistant to the President for National Security, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Meanwhile, if former President Donald Trump wins the election, he is expected to appoint a new ambassador to Japan, a key ally of the United States.
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. Although President Joe Biden was initially expected to represent the Democratic Party, he withdrew from the race on July 21 following mounting pressure from within his party after a poor debate performance against Trump in June.
