US backs peaceful power transition in Syria, says Blinken

07 January 2025 10:27

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed America’s commitment to a peaceful political transition in Syria, emphasizing the need for an inclusive, representative, and accountable government led by and belonging to the Syrian people.

Blinken made these remarks during a conversation with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

In a statement released by U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken underscored the international community's shared responsibility to ensure that all parties in Syria respect the rights and freedoms of all Syrians, including minorities, and avoid using Syria as a base for terrorism.

The Secretary of State also highlighted the importance of humanitarian aid flowing throughout Syria and expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s ongoing support to the Syrian people.

The two officials also discussed the ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, which would ensure the release of all hostages and increase humanitarian assistance. Additionally, they touched upon the implementation of a ceasefire regime between Israel and Lebanon. Blinken emphasized the continued support for legitimate security institutions in Lebanon, including the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces.
