US cancels deployment of thousands of troops to Poland
The US Army has cancelled the planned deployment of the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, to Poland, affecting more than 4,000 troops and associated military equipment.
An Army official confirmed the decision on May 13 but provided no further details, referring questions to the Pentagon, which declined to comment, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The move comes amid broader adjustments to the US military presence in Europe.
In April, the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany following a review of operational requirements and conditions in the region.
The reduction would return US troop levels in Europe to roughly where they stood before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
More than 10,000 American troops are currently deployed to Poland on a rotational basis.
The US Army is reportedly facing a budget shortfall of at least $2 billion due to extended operations, including National Guard deployments to Washington and missions linked to US border security.
