US cancels over $30 million funding for Moldova's media development Photo
Elon Musk, head of the U.S. Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE), has cancelled a planned $32 million allocation intended for media development in Moldova.
The funding, which was initially earmarked for promoting democracy, inclusivity, and accountability, is now being withheld, Caliber.Az reports, referencing Moldovan media.
The money was also intended to support the creation of "sustainable media institutions" in the country.
The decision comes amid concerns that the Trump administration’s withdrawal of financial support for pro-democratic institutions and independent media could have significant political repercussions in Moldova. According to Balkan Insight, this could potentially harm the prospects of Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity party in the upcoming elections.
In another development, on February 13, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the termination of its agreement with Russia regarding the operation of the Russian House in Chisinau. The Ministry stated that following the completion of procedural formalities, the Russian Cultural Centre would be required to cease its activities in Moldova.
