Two die during celebrations of Mexico's World Cup win over Ecuador
Celebrations of Mexico's historic FIFA World Cup victory turned tragic after two people died from suffocation while taking part in post-match festivities in Mexico City, local authorities said.
Mexico City's Health Department confirmed the deaths of a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, according to Mexican newspaper La Jornada.
Officials said both died from suffocation during celebrations following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup round of 32.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and an investigation is underway.
Mexico's win secured a place in the round of 16 and marked the country's first progression beyond the opening knockout stage of a World Cup since the 1986 tournament, sparking widespread celebrations across the country.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is due to conclude on July 19. Argentina are the defending champions.
