US envoy: Syria to aid Washington counter IRGC, Hamas, Hezbollah
Syria will play an active role in assisting the United States in its fight against armed groups, including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hamas and Hezbollah, US Special Envoy Tom Barrack wrote on X.
According to Barrack, Damascus will now help Washington confront and dismantle the remnants of ISIS, the IRGC, Hamas, Hizballah and other terrorist networks, positioning itself as a committed partner in the global effort to secure peace, Caliber.Az reports.
“I had the profound honor of accompanying Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to the White House, where he became the first Syrian Head of State ever to visit since Syria gained its independence in 1946,” he noted.
Shortly after al-Sharaa’s visit, the US-led coalition fighting ISIS announced that Syria had become its 90th member.
The IRGC and Lebanon’s Hezbollah were key supporters of President Bashar al-Assad until he was overthrown last December by a coalition led by al-Sharaa.
Barrack also said he held a “key” meeting with senior US diplomat Marco Rubio, Türkiye’s Hakan Fidan and Syria’s Asaad al-Shaibani, during which they discussed steps to “integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the new Syrian economic, defense and civil structure.”
Türkiye’s tireless role deserves special acknowledgement, the US special envoy said, describing it as a testament to the quiet, steadfast diplomacy that builds bridges where walls once stood.
