The Israel-Hamas war, ignited by Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack killing 1,200 Israelis and taking 250 hostages, has claimed over 67,000 Palestinian lives, displaced 90% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, and triggered a humanitarian catastrophe with famine risks amid aid blockades.
Ceasefires in November 2023 and January 2025 collapsed quickly, but Trump's "Comprehensive End of Gaza War" plan—proposing phased hostage releases (starting with 50 living Israelis for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners), Israeli troop pullbacks, Hamas disarmament, international governance of Gaza, and aid surges—gained traction after indirect Sharm el-Sheikh talks in early October 2025, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and U.S. pressure.
