US hesitant to approve long-range missiles for Ukraine Amid concerns over costs and escalation
The Biden administration is wary of modifying US policy to allow Ukraine to use American-made long-range missiles against targets deep within Russia.
According to a US official, the Intelligence Committee and the Pentagon have recommended against this change, believing the potential costs would outweigh the benefits, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The assessment from the Intelligence Community (IC) and the Department of Defense (DOD) suggests that such a policy adjustment would not significantly impact the war's trajectory. Much of Russia's military infrastructure has been relocated beyond the range of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which has a reach of 300 kilometers. As a result, the idea that long-range missiles would effectively target critical assets is considered a misconception.
Additionally, Ukraine lacks sufficient ATACMS stock, and the US cannot deplete its own reserves without jeopardizing its military readiness.
While President Biden has not ruled out future policy changes, he has been reluctant to approve the request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for long-range missiles, citing minimal strategic benefit and potential risks. The official emphasized the need to consider Russia's potential reactions, noting its status as a nuclear power capable of significant retaliation. Concerns about escalation also play a critical role in the decision-making process, with the IC indicating that Russia would likely reposition its military assets if new missile capabilities were granted to Ukraine.
Moreover, the Biden administration is contemplating additional sanctions in response to reports of North Korean troops being sent to Russia. Talks are ongoing with allies regarding the appropriate response.
In a recent exchange, National Security spokesperson John Kirby remarked on the uncertainty surrounding North Korean soldiers' involvement in the conflict, stating that any such deployment would make them legitimate military targets. Zelenskyy recently visited the US to advocate for lifting restrictions on long-range missiles as part of his "victory plan."
