US officers express discontent over army chief of staff resignation
US military officers have voiced dissatisfaction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to dismiss Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, The New York Times reports.
According to the newspaper, the resignation comes amid ongoing tensions between Hegseth and Army leadership, including disagreements over personnel matters. The decision has reportedly frustrated senior officers, who view it as another blow to the US Army.
General Christopher LaNeve, George’s deputy and a former aide to Hegseth, is expected to succeed him.
Since taking office in January 2025, Hegset has ordered the removal of several generals, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown. In April 2025, former Pentagon spokesperson John Elliot told Politico that the department was in “total chaos,” partly due to these dismissals.
