Media: US prepares new round of sanctions on Russia’s energy sector
The United States is reportedly preparing a fresh round of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector to increase pressure on Moscow if President Vladimir Putin rejects a potential peace deal with Ukraine, Reuters reports.
According to the report, US authorities are considering measures that could target vessels in Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of tankers used to transport oil, as well as traders who facilitate these transactions.
Both the White House and the US State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The new sanctions could be announced as early as this week. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly discussed the potential measures during a meeting with a group of European ambassadors earlier this week.
