US says Poland to become EU leader as it spends more on defence

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien has said that the United States sees Poland as the future leader of the European Union (EU), as it spends more than others on defence.

O'Brien said the US and Poland have always co-operated very closely in the field of security, according to the newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

He also recalled that NATO decided to strengthen the eastern flank.

The official also recalled that most of the US’s NATO allies spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence, while Poland spends much more.

"Very useful regional defence plans have been developed, which are being implemented better and better every month," he explained.
