US-UK bond remains strong despite Trump’s criticism, says PM
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the “special relationship” between Britain and the US remains strong, despite recent criticism from President Donald Trump over the UK’s stance on the war against Iran.
Speaking at a press conference on March 5, Starmer said that the special relationship was in operation right now, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“We are working together in the region, we’re sharing intelligence on a 24/7 basis in the usual way. That is the special relationship,” he added.
The remarks follow Trump’s public criticism on March 2 after the UK denied the US permission to use British military airbases in the Chagos Islands for offensive operations against Iran. “This is not Winston Churchill that we’re dealing with,” Trump said.
Despite the sharp comments, Starmer emphasised there is no breakdown in ties between the two leaders. “Clearly it’s for the president to take decisions that he considers in the national interest, the right decisions for the US,” he noted.
