US, UK launch airstrikes on Yemen's province
The US and the UK launched a series of airstrikes on Hodeidah province in Yemen, targeting key locations in the ongoing conflict.
Four strikes hit the Ras Issa area in the Salif district of Al Hudaydah in western Yemen, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.
Neither the US nor the UK has provided official comments on the airstrikes.
This escalation follows an earlier incident on July 20, when Israeli forces attacked an oil storage facility in the Hodeidah port, which is controlled by the Houthi rebels. The Yemeni Ministry of Health reported that the attack injured 80 people. This marked Israel's first strike on Yemen since the conflict with the Houthis intensified. The attack was coordinated with the US and the international coalition conducting operations in Yemen, following a Houthi drone strike near the US embassy in Tel Aviv that resulted in one fatality.
The recent airstrikes come in the wake of heightened tensions in the region. On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian Hamas movement attacked border areas of Israel, taking military personnel and residents hostage. Israel's response, known as Operation Iron Swords, aims to release the hostages and dismantle Hamas. Yemen has expressed support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with the Houthis labeling Israel's actions as "genocide" and attacking ships in the Red Sea believed to be linked to Israel.
In January, attacks on commercial shipping in the region prompted the US and UK to strike more than 60 targets in Yemen. The rebels have vowed to continue their assaults until the conflict in the Gaza Strip ceases.
As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, with concerns over the escalating violence and its potential repercussions on regional stability.
