Uzbek president unveils new integration initiatives at Central Asia–Japan summit

20 December 2025 10:42

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the first Central Asia–Japan summit, where he put forward a series of initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation between Japan and the countries of Central Asia, according to the press service of the Uzbek head of state.

In his address, Mirziyoyev proposed institutionalising the summit format by holding meetings at the level of heads of state once every two years. He noted that Uzbekistan is ready to host one of these future summits.

The Uzbek leader also expressed support for Japan’s initiative to establish a new permanent cooperation mechanism in the fields of justice and law, including the proposal to hold the first meeting of justice ministers in Tokyo next year.

At the same time, Mirziyoyev suggested that a meeting of education ministers be organised in Uzbekistan and called for the creation of a new format for regular meetings among the heads of environmental agencies.

Mirziyoyev further proposed developing a long-term “Central Asia–Japan 2040” cooperation strategy. He said the document should include specific programs and projects designed to promote the sustainable development of Central Asian countries and support their deeper integration into global economic processes.

“I am confident that by combining Central Asia’s rich natural and human resources with Japan’s industrial and technological potential, we can achieve a synergy effect,” Mirziyoyev said.

In addition, the president of Uzbekistan voiced interest in attracting Japanese investment, advanced technologies, and expert assistance for projects focused on building high-speed railways and highways, digitalising transport corridors, and constructing airports and logistics hubs.

Referring to Japan’s extensive experience in seismic safety, Mirziyoyev proposed launching a joint program to assess and strengthen seismic resilience. He also suggested establishing a regional professional development centre in Tashkent to train engineers, architects, and emergency response specialists in line with Japanese standards.

Touching on international affairs and regional security, Mirziyoyev emphasised that Central Asian countries and Japan share a common position on the future of Afghanistan, expressing a joint commitment to seeing it become a peaceful, stable country oriented toward constructive development.
